Job Description

A unique opportunity to join, develop, and lead the Independent Budget Office’s newly expanded education unit. Since opening in 1996, IBO, a New York City government agency, has developed a reputation for providing reliable, accessible, and nonpartisan information and analysis on NYC budget issues and the local economy. The state legislature has expanded IBO’s responsibilities for reviewing and reporting on the New York City Department of Education’s performance and spending. We are seeking an experienced research director to manage a staff of policy and budget researchers. Candidates must have experience: • Coordinating, scheduling work, and ensuring deadlines are met • Reviewing work for quality, accuracy, integrity, and readability • Mentoring, motivating, promoting teamwork, and training staff. Responsibilities will also include helping to identify relevant topics for research and developing key indicators for inclusion in an annual report designed to help improve public information about school spending, demographics, performance, and building conditions. The research director must be able to interact with a broad range of stakeholders in the school system, be adept at managing multiple priority projects, and be able to work collaboratively. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of New York City education issues and experience conducting quantitative policy analysis using large, complex data sets. Experience making public presentations or giving testimony is also a plus. Salary range: $90,000-$130,000, depending upon experience. New York City residency is required for candidates with less than two years of city service; others may reside in the city, or Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam, or Westchester counties. IBO is an equal opportunity employer. Send cover letter and resume by May 14 to: resumes@ibo.nyc.ny.us or fax to 212-442-0350. No phone calls.
