Position Summary: Under direct supervision of the department director, the assistant director will be responsible for assisting locals and state federations in contract negotiations, benefits education and in legislative activities related to compensation. In addition, the assistant director will support efforts to bargain improvements in AFT members’ health insurance and other negotiated benefits and will have responsibility for establishing and expanding contacts with relevant government and private organizations. Position responsibilities: • Assist AFT locals with all issues relating to public and private sector bargaining in regards to health insurance and pension plans including provide analysis of compensation and benefits such as wages, health insurance, prescription drugs and deferred compensation, as well as review economic, fiscal and demographic data as required to support these efforts. • Develop strategies and provide research to maintain and improve compensation, including wages and various employee benefits, e.g., health insurance, prescription drug plans, and other group-related benefits. • Provide assistance with the development and maintenance of bargaining strategy tools for negotiators and local leaders and/or legislative and benefit-related policy. • Obtain data and information and develop contacts within organized labor to advance the goals of AFT. • Make presentations to AFT affiliates, staff and allied organizations as directed. • Prepare written articles or reports for use by AFT staff and affiliates. • Serve as department representative at meetings and conferences. Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Experience in negotiations for public sector workers. • An in-depth knowledge of negotiating for compensation including experience in health insurance bargaining. • Knowledge of deferred compensation plans and knowledge of resources on pension benefits. • Must be well-versed in federal and state regulatory requirements relating to negotiations and employee benefits. • Ability to interpret and analyze data on compensation as well as comprehend plan documents • Good communication skills including both written and oral communication • Strong technology skills and experience working with databases and the ability to collect and analyze data related to compensation, financial reports and labor agreements • Experience in the preparation of presentations, papers and reports • A minimum of a bachelors degree in a related field • Basic knowledge of the operations of the various institutions that employ AFT members • Travel is required Secondary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Prior work experience in a union environment is preferred. • Familiarity with AFT and/or its affiliates is considered a plus.
