The American Education Finance Association’s New Scholars Award Program is intended to interest masters and doctoral students and recent graduates in conducting research in elementary, secondary, and higher education finance. Each year (AEFA) sponsors research to support promising new scholars who wish to investigate significant issues in education finance.
Doctoral scholars. Grants for $2,000 may be awarded to individuals who received, or will receive a doctoral degree between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2010.
Pre-doctoral scholars. Grants for $2000 may be awarded to individuals who:
1. are currently enrolled in a doctoral program, or
2. received or will receive a master's degree between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2010. The pre-doctoral awards also include a one-year membership to AEFA.
Any individual can receive only one award in each category. Further, if there are multiple investigators on a project, all must be eligible for one or the other award and the award category must be that for the most senior investigator. In these cases, a single award will be made in the name of all investigators.
Applications must include a cover page with the applicant’s name and contact information, title of proposal, source of data, date and institution masters or doctoral degree received/expected. The project proposal should outline:
Project descriptions should be concise (not to exceed 1,800 words including any appendices) yet provide sufficient detail to enable reviewers to judge the merits of the proposed project.
Applicants for pre-doctoral awards must also submit a letter from someone familiar with the applicant's ability to complete the proposed research project (e.g., dissertation chair, faculty member, or supervisor). The letter should indicate that he/she has reviewed the proposal and supports the applicant as capable of completing the proposed work.
All applications should be submitted to the address below, in electronic format (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or pdf formats). The results of the competition will be publicly announced at the 2011 AEFA Annual Conference. Successful applicants will be required to present a paper based on their research at the 2012 AEFA conference.
